Local Government Regional Networks in NSW

Local Government Sustainability Education Networks using the Department of Local Government local government regions.

Western Sydney: WSEEN – Western Sydney Environment Education Network

The Western Sydney Environmental Education Network was formed in 2000 to help foster links between the environmental educators of Western Sydney, to facilitate the sharing of information and for participants to learn from one another. On all accounts the Network has been a success. Councils are always willing to share their great ideas and to assist each other in delivering outstanding environmental education initiatives. In late 2005 WSEEN asked to become a WSROC Working Party. WSROC’s Board agreed to this request and since then the WSROC Secretariat has helped WSEEN to organise meetings and implement projects.

Contact: Ryan Pascoe WSROC

Update: Meet quarterly, highlight of Network 2005 Regional Schools Environmental Debating Competition for Western Sydney Environment Month.

Southern Sydney: Southern Sydney Local Government Sustainability Education Network

The council educators in the SSROC region will be meeting as a Network for the first time in May 2007 hosted by Waverley Council.

Northern Sydney: Northern Sydney Environmental Education Network (NSEEN)

NSROC has offered to host an environmental education professional group. Leonne Donnelly from Willoughby Council has offered to steer this group in the initial stages and the first meeting is to be held in May.

The Northern Sydney Environmental Education Network (NSEEN) will comprise environmental education officers across Northern Sydney. NSEEN will be active in the area of environmental / sustainability education and provide important ideas and information exchange forum. NSEEN plans to start undertaking regional environmental initiatives.

We propose to meet 4 times a year.

Richmond Tweed: Northern Rivers Environmental Educators Group

The aim of NRGee is to create a regional approach to environmental education through increased coordination and collaboration on environmental education programs. Highlight is a Newsletter produced by the North east Waste Forum Education officer.

Mid North Coast: Mid Rivers Group of Environmental Educators (MRGEE)

Vision: Increase the delivery and effectiveness of Environmental Education / Education for Sustainability (EE/EfS) on the coast and hinterland of mid north NSW.

Mid Rivers EE Network first meet in 2006 and meets quarterly.

Hunter / Central Coast

Hunter Councils hosts the local government education network and DEC runs the regional Waste to Art project.

Illawarra/ Shoalhaven : Illawarra/Shoalhaven Sustainability Education Network (ISSEN)

The network has been developed to improve communication of sustainability education initiatives across Local Government boundaries.  The network will enable close links between Local Government and Non Government Organisations to foster a coordinated, regional approach to sustainability education in the Illawarra/Shoalhaven.

The network will provide an opportunity for participants (on behalf of their organisations) to gain project ideas, professional development, learn about new technologies and programs, share resources and experiences and broaden contacts within the Illawarra/Shoalhaven Community.

The network is hoped to be hosted by Southern Councils Group, who will provide an web-based communication point.  The network will meet quarterly with meeting locations rotated between member organisations.

Councils in the following regions are active in the sustainability/environmental education networks formed by other organisations.

  • Outer Sydney – Macarthur  MACARTHUR SUSTAINABLE SCHOOLS NETWORK hosted by Camden Park EEC.

  • Central West/ Far West – Netwaste educator is active in the Western educators Network based around Dubbo.
